Open Space: Between Worlds 2 (bilingual event in English and Korean)
September 13, 2020 7:00PM EST
Co-founders of Open Space Music, violinist Hyeyung Sol Yoon and cellist Gregory Beaver kick off the fall season with performances of works by living American composers including Matthew Fuerst, Carlos Simon, Anjna Swaminathan, and Gregory Beaver. The program will feature Fuerst’s frenetic duo written for Hyeyung and Gregory, Swaminathan’s solo violin work written for Hyeyung that draws from the composer’s Indian Carnatic violin training with her guru MS Gopalakrishnan, Gregory’s solo cello work inspired by Bach’s transcendent Chaconne for violin, and finally Simon’s Between Worlds, inspired by the art of Bill Traylor, a Black man who was enslaved at birth and was an eyewitness to American history from Civil War to Jim Crow segregation. Traylor made the radical steps, in his late-eighties, of taking up pencil and paintbrush and creating his point of view on scraps of cardboard and wrapping paper, and created more than one thousand works of art. Explore between worlds through music created with radical steps by living American artists.
