Open Space: American Vein with Valerie Coleman
December 5, 2020 7:00PM EST
Flutist, composer, entrepreneur, and creator of Imani Winds, Valerie Coleman is joined by OboeBass! (Carrie Vecchione, oboe & Rolf Erdahl, bass) - the world's only professional oboe bass duo - to present a selection of Valerie’s original works. In a recent interview with New Music USA Valerie describes her focus as a composer being “the shared qualities of human behavior, what feeds the soul, what identifies the issues or all the complexities within ourselves as human beings.”
OboeBass! will perform Valerie’s original composition American Vein commissioned by Chamber Music America for the ensemble. The five-movement piece - about the unity and pride of a unified America - tours the country, starting with the Redwood Forests, cruises down Route 66, visits Woodstock of 1952, pays homage to the Melting Pot at the Statue of Liberty, and finishes off with “Barn Raising, Bourbon and Bluegrass" and features poems by the composer. Valerie will also perform her new compositions for solo flute on the program, and the performances will be interspersed with talks from the performers giving an inside look into their creative process.
